The temple and religious institutions of Tamil Nadu were reorganized andre-established and their control was centralized to a greater extent.This was a difficult task for the King and the leaders of the community. Despiteof the fact that the kings of Tamil Nadu were content in accepting a regime ofdevotion in their kingdom, there was a lot of opposition from the personthe kings ruled, especially the elite and the powerful. Hymns and songs are arranged chronologically, in a table,apart from the texts of mANikkavAcakar (910-978) and theCuntarar's couplet (12th C.) the texts are arranged according to old Tamiland Sanskrit names, with the commentaries of the scholars andthe synonyms with the glosses by the scholars. Also on title page,there is an account of the praise of the saints (periya purANam)by the scholars, lists of hymns by the saint, author of the hymntoprinted or written (?) by the saint, the date, a brief history ofthe saint by Cuntarar and the details of each saint. A brief descriptionof the saints, their birth, and death is also given. Sometimes,a verse to the saint is added, which is usually a description of theholy saint's activities. It is interesting to note that even thoughsome writers in the 16th and 17th C. were very familiar withthe Tamil Veda, they not only failed to have the knowledge of thetEvAram, but also totally ignored the saints, the ultimate sages....The language of the hymns is ancient Tamil, though there is a sprinkling of Sanskrit words and phrases....The translations into English, given below, are by D. Subramanian, theChief of the Tamil Department of the Central Institute of IndianLanguages, Mysore, and are based on the critical edition published in1937 by the Tamil Department, Mysore, published by Ceylon Government.R.V. Srinivasan, the then Chief of the Tamil Department andS.K. Krishnamurthy, the then Assistant Chief, have carried outthe translations in collaboration with D.
